the citizens. However, without law enforcement the society would not be as safe or as cohesive as it is. The following paper examines the purpose of law enforcement in the
United States. The Purpose of Law Enforcement in the United States As mentioned, there are many who would argue that law enforcement has too much power over the
citizens of the United States. In this it may well be argued that in some cases the purpose of law enforcement, from perhaps something of a conspiracy theory, is to
keep people in a particular place in society and to essentially control the direction a society takes. However, aside from this possibility, law enforcements purpose is to essentially serve and
protect the society. If we look at any given society, and a society that is incredibly large, such as the United States, we realize there must be laws that all
people must agree on. Without these laws the society would not be safe, and the society would turn in on itself in chaos. People would run the streets everywhere and
do whatever they wanted. While many people in society would be harmless, there would be enough out for selfish intent that it would make society a dangerous place to live
within. Rules are necessary for any organization and an enormous society is no different, in fact it requires more laws than a simple organization. "The law in most countries
permits policemen [sic] to use force, if necessary, to make an arrest, to keep the peace, or to maintain public order" (Jones, 2005). This illustrates that some form of order
is necessary in a society and as such law enforcement is needed to keep that peace, to ensure laws are abided by so that the rest of society can feel
