sure that everyone has a fair chance to earn money and pursue happiness. In protecting life, the state has the duty to implement laws and does this inclusive of but
not limited to laws that oppose abortion and capital punishment. Currently, both are legal but each one truncates human life, reducing it to something that can be either taken as
punishment or for convenience. If government is to protect life fully, it should also protect animal life. Clearly, government does not protect life now. Rather, it protects the rights of
millions of individuals and feeds and clothes them, and buys them tickets into rehabs, and gives them jobs and childcare. Much of what it does sustains life, but that is
really something it does indirectly. Not providing care for children and the impoverished does not mean that the government is not protecting life. Capitalism is an institution that provides opportunity
and when the government protects life, it should only do so by laws that prohibit its taking. This means that both abortion and the death penalty should be outlawed and
that murdering animals should also be against the law. These are really the only concerns of the government as it goes to protecting life. The government must protect liberty
as well. First, what is liberty exactly and why should it be protected? Liberty and freedom are one in the same. In his famous essay On Liberty, Mill says: "the
