The human pulmonary system is one of the most complex of all living organisms. The lungs, of course, are the most important features of this system. They function in gas exchange, more specifically in the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide. The lungs are characterized by several specific features. The alveoli, for example, are tiny air sacs that hold the air after it is delivered to them by the bronchioles, very small tubes that connect the alveoli to the two bronchial tubes which, in turn, connect to form the trachea. The trachea is the main channel that the air passes through when it enters the nose and the mouth. Air exchange in the lung occurs when carbon dioxide, a waste product of the body, is passed from the blood in the capillaries that surround the alveoli, through the walls of the alveoli. Simultaneously, oxygen is passed out of the alveoli and into the capillaries where it is carried to the rest of the body. The carbon dioxide, in turn, is expelled from the lungs when the individual exhales. Many diverse conditions can affect the lung. Asthma is one such condition. Unfortunately, asthma is too often dismissed as an insignificant health complication. An astounding fifteen percent of the general population, however, has asthma (Sandler, 1996). Asthma is one of several restrictive airway diseases (RAD) which can be complicated by a number of factors. Some of these factors are biological but others are occupational. Testing and treatment methodologies are similar for each. Too often, however, appropriate tests and treatment regimes are bypassed. ...
