distort him to make him a legend. Methodology Various searches using parameters such as +"media portrayals" +"T.E. Lawrence" or +"public perception" +"T.E. Lawrence" and similar variations have not yielded helpful
results. Plain text questions like "why did the press distort T.E. Lawrence?" have been even less useful. Therefore, it seemed best to simply search for "T.E. Lawrence" and glean facts
about the man, and extrapolating from those findings, construct a reasonable explanation as to why contemporary accounts were less than truthful-if they were. Of course the first thing that springs
to mind are the allegations of Lawrences homosexuality, but Lawrence scholars have denied that he was gay (while gay people claim he was). The truth will never be known. But
even if he was homosexual, Britain has always at least seemed more tolerant of sexual differences than the U.S. Would a man raised in Britain and sent through the public
school system have felt it necessary to hide his orientation, if indeed he was gay? It seems somehow unlikely and perhaps we need to consider his disregard for authority, the
contempt he displayed for some of his fellow Englishmen, and his championing of the Arab cause as potential reasons for any media distortions. Englishmen, after all, are supposed to be
English; they do not wear Arab robes, live with Arabs and become immersed in Arab culture. We shall see. Discussion T.E. Lawrence continues to fascinate us because of the many
