focuses on the surveillance of asthma by public health workers and the effectiveness of emerging efforts to create better management plans for the disease. Boss, Kreutzer, Luttinger, Leighton,
Wilcox and Redds (2001) introduce their study by stating that the economic, medical and social impacts of asthma in the United States are high even though excellent tools exist
for the management of the disease. In fact, these researchers state that though there are effective tools, they are not used optimally and with consistency, and propose the need
for better surveillance methods in public health in order to identify individuals with asthma, create effective treatment models, and provide adequate medical response. The researchers pose four specific
questions to be answered in regards to asthma surveillance, through an assessment of the current literature. This analytical review of existing data provides the basis for their assessment of
existing surveillance methods and the need for increasing measures in the future. These questions are: 1. How much asthma is there and what are the existing trends
and patterns of asthma occurrence over time? 2. What are the levels of severity relative to asthma onset and how has the severity changed over time. 3. Are
effective methods for control in place for asthma and how have treatment measures changed over time? 4. What is the cost of asthma at the current time and what
are projected costs for the future? These questions are utilized as the basis for the study and in creating a longitudinal view of existing statistical data. The researchers
then present the background of the problem, which includes statistical data about the prevalence of asthma in the United States and changes in asthma statistics over time. The authors also
