This 20 page paper examines the concept and manifestation of the psychological contract in the employment relationship. The paper begins with defining the psychosocial contract, what it is and different aspects of this ‘implied’ contract. The paper then considers how it was recognised that there were unseen aspects to the employment relationship and that these could be managed to gain more benefit for the employer and to increase the satisfaction of the employee. The paper then considers how the use recognition of this contract may add benefit and also how, when it is not utilised, there are likely to be negative behaviour patterns. relationship, this is the psychological contract. The term contract may be seen as one that is implied rather than written, and in using the description psychological means that it is
the relationship as it exists in the minds of the parties to the contract. In general terms it is understood that there will be a psychological relationship between employer and
employee. In understanding the concept it becomes apparent that the contract may be divergent between different industries and levels of employment and even the culture within with the employment contract
takes place. In general terms the contract will involve the idea that the employee will work hard and produce the required level of productivity, and the employer to treat the
employee with respect paying decent wages with reasonable benefits for that commitment. In examining the psychological contract the first stage is to consider in what ways the terms may be
interpreted and the degrees to which the commitments may be included. Following an understanding of the contract the way in which it applies practically to the employment relationship may
be accessed by looking at the development of the understanding of this form of contract and how it may impact ion the working environment. After this the contemporary situation
may be considered in more detail. 2. The Psychological Contract There are a range of issues and areas where the psychological contract may be seen as present. It is
even implied within common law and the requirement for employees to be treated with respect and the regulation of the employment relationship (Lockton, 1999). The psychological aspect has also been
seen to exist in terms of the way expectation develop between employers and employees, some of which are there from the beginning and some of which develop (Rousseau, 1995, 1990,
