could be noted when applying Classical Theory to language development and the cognitive processes related to linguistics. Specifically, criticism of Classical Theory included the belief that concept possession cannot
exist without exception and the belief that conceptual fuzziness can influence the way in which concepts are categorized (Margolis and Laurence, 2000). As a result, the Prototype Theory was
proposed as an alternative to Classical Theory, and attempted to address some of the central issues related to the criticism of Classical Theory. From the earliest period in
our development as infants, the roots of language begin to show themselves. Infants use sounds to convey their needs and to express emotions in much the same manner that
individuals utilize fully development language patterns to convey similar information. Researchers have argued, though, that children who are raised in environments with little communication or input develop language in
a different manner than children who experience distinct, patterned and repetitive verbal input during their development. Central to this view is support for cognitive development as the foundation for
language processing and categorization which were integrated into elements of Classical Theory. Classical Theory, though, was challenged by the introduction of a truly alternative system of viewing the way
in which language is categorized so that it can be contextualized, understood and utilized. The Prototype Theory first proposed in the early 1970s replaced many of the tenets of
