what they will tell their boss when they arrive to work late and so forth. Indeed, most people are not deep thinkers and their philosophical lives are reduced to church
on Sunday where they really are not spiritually nurtured or challenged to think for themselves. Sophie Amundsen is a seeker and through the use of this character, author Jostein Gaarder
is able to relay the intricacies of philosophy. In some way, this fictitious creation is really something that is quite informative. How is Gaarder able to accomplish this? In
part, the characterization of Sophie aids in his ability to relay ideas about philosophy or as the author explains, the history of philosophy. The novel in part does read like
a history of philosophy as the Norwegian teen takes the reader on a journey to the past. Sophie is a fourteen year old girl who will turn fifteen by the
time the book ends, and takes a philosophy course. The age of the protagonist is telling. Why would the writer choose a young girl to embark on this very adult
and complex journey? One can see as the story unfolds that Sophies energy, open-mindedness and inquisitive nature all add to the study of philosophy and the ability of the author
to relay points about philosophy. Yet, Sophie is running form her own fears. Early on in the book, the author writes about the main character: "...the thought of dying also
came to her mind" (Gaarder 5). Sophies tender age is equated with character traits such as innocence and open-mindedness. She is not yet jaded nor has she been overexposed
