time to get needed help, a longer school day can be conducive to raising excellent future workers. At the same time, such a proposal is limiting and somewhat destructive in
terms of morale. As it is, morale throughout American schools is rather low. Academics wonder how they can fix the failing schools. While lengthening the day seems to be an
answer for some, for others it appears to be the absolute antithesis to creating a proper school atmosphere. A student writing a pro/con essay on this subject will want to
narrow down reasons as to why the school day should be lengthened and why it should not. Also, what are the specifics in terms of lengthening the day? Should schools
be lengthened by one hour or two hours? What are advantages and disadvantages of such changes? In one proposal, a school schedule begins at 7:30 a.m. and lets students out
at 2:30 p.m. This is of course a typical high school day. A proposal would be to add two hours onto that. Thus, students would theoretically be in
school from 7:30 A.M. through 4:30 P.M. This is quite a long day and more than the typical 9 to 5 paradigm. That said, the 9 to 5 model is
rather old. At the same time, students are not used to being in school for that long a time and adding hours to the school can be expensive. One article
points out that the cost of extending the school day is not cheap and that for example, Mayor Giuliani promised $25 million per year to give middle-and high-school
