compared to that of men. It was only during World War II, after all, when women began to join the military in any numbers. Even then, however, their
roles were very different from their male counterparts. In more recent years, of course, women have begun to play a more prominent role in our military. Today, for
example, they fight right alongside men in Iraq. Their roles are no longer restricted to being a nurse, airplane mechanic, or driver. As womens military roles evolve the
controversy over whether or not they should actually be in the military in the fist place has lessened but it has by no means disappeared. Indeed, many contend even
today that women should not serve in the military at all. The reality is, however, that not only should women serve, they have demonstrated that they are fully capable
of fulfilling any military role that is assigned them. Restricting them in this role reflects a lack of integrity on the part of the military and on the part
of the American public that condones that restriction. Integrity, of course, can mean a multitude of things from a military perspective. There
is not only the integrity of the individual and the integrity of the military but also the integrity of our country and our American values. Each of these meanings,
however, calls in the central fortitude of the individual, whether that individual is male or female. This is the same central fortitude that supports not only that individual but
the military as a whole. By carefully considering the various factors which are conducive to individual and military success it becomes apparent that fully including women at all levels
