There are numerous states, however, that have secondary laws concerning wearing seat belts which means that they cannot be stopped for not wearing seat belts but if they are stopped for another violation they can be cited for not wearing a seat belt. In relationship to these laws there are many people who side with one argument or another, in terms of whether people benefit from wearing seat belts or not. The following paper presents a cause and effect that addresses both sides. The Pros and Cons of Wearing Seat Belts Saves lives: There is the obvious argument concerning seat belts, which claims wearing a seat belt increases ones chance of surviving a crash. One author notes "When crashes occur, unrestrained drivers are thrown against their steering wheels or ejected from their cars, while unbelted passengers hit the dashboard or go through the windshield. People who are ejected in crashes are 25 times more likely to be killed than those who remain within the vehicle" (Westlake-Kenny). Yet another author argues that in some areas more accidents occur when the seat belts laws are in place, indicating that in some ways wearing seat belts causes accidents (Kareiva). Perhaps people think they are safe and drive less cautiously when they wear a seat belt. Wearing a seat belt can do someone damage as well for it can trap a person in some circumstances. So wearing a seat belt could prevent a person from being thrown from the car and killed but wearing a seat belt could also trap a person in a car in a life threatening situation.
