Of course, throughout history, people have taught their own children well but it is only in recent times that homeschooling has become a controversial topic. While it has increased in popularity, it is no panacea (Guterson, 1998). In fact, there are pros and cons of homeschooling and often, discussions about it are heated. After all, some point to the fact that trouble comes from home school environments. Andrea Yates was a homeschooling mom. Sometimes, dysfunction in the family can be kept hidden if children are not scrutinized by school officials. On the other end of the spectrum are the whiz kids, spelling bee champions who are often home schooled. It seems that some of the best and brightest people come from these successful home school environments. The spelling bee anecdote is not an exaggeration. For example, Calvin McCarter is a home schooled student who won a twenty-five thousand dollar college scholarship for winning the geography bee (Elvin, 2002). These cases are not rare. Homeschooled children usually fare well and do better in competitions and on tests. Of course, those are two extreme examples of when home school goes bad as in the Andrea Yates case and when it is good as it produces early scholarship winners. Most homeschooling is done by ordinary people who simply desire a better education than public schools can muster. What are the pros and cons of learning at home and what are the effects on public education as an institution? Some positive results of homeschooling are that there is variety.
