What are the contributions and structural functionality of ActiveX? First, what is ActiveX? ActiveX is something that crosses Web browsers with Java applets along with desktop necessities like Word documents, spreadsheets, scripting, and the like. Vaitsis (1997) explains that while OLE and OLE2 as well as the entire COM/DCOM/OLE/ActiveX world has great aspirations, there is a question as to whether or not it has the right tools. A major question is in fact whether or not these new things will be able to keep pace with the demands of the business world. In some ways, it seems as if technology has grown at a rapid pace and that businesses were not keeping up with it. Now that everyone is on board so to speak, in terms of the Internet and computer technology, will ActiveX hold businesses back? A brief history in understanding how ActiveX arrived on the scene may help to understand the dilemma in business today. Microsoft introduced OLE and OLE2 to link documents and implement drag and drop applications (Vaitsis, 1997) . Although new to the Windows word, this technology had been embraced by Apple for quite some time. Soon, the new communication model for OLE2 was deemed COM and languages which drove applications through OLE became OLE controls or OCXs (1997). There were limitations with COM but it was a successful product in general. When in 1995, Microsoft began to encompass the Internet, a new name would arrive which was ActiveX (1997).
