lives of women in India have changed substantially in many respects since the nineteenth century. In other respects, however, there remain many similarities. These lives are structured within
the society as a whole and while Indian society has changed along with the rest of the world, certain aspects of it have remained the same. The move of
many families from an agrarian lifestyle that characterized the nineteenth century to one that is dependent on industry and commerce has been particularly influential in regard to womens lives.
That move has impacted the organization and interworkings of the individual families and society as a whole. While women in more industrialized countries
like the United States are slowly gaining a toe hold in terms of societal equality, other women around the world are far too often being held hostage in societal positions
which are inferior to men (Marger, 1999). The differences between the roles and responsibilities of men and women are great, even in the more progressive countries like the United
States. In lesser developed countries, however, these differences are sometimes phenomenal (Marger, 1999). Such is the case with India to a degree. Indian women too, however, are
slowly gaining momentum in terms of equal rights. While in nineteenth century India many things were constant, today it seems that all of
society is in a certain degree of fluctuation. As a consequence, social organization in India today varies considerably. The amount of money or resources a family has is
often of particular importance in determining the particulars of a womans life. Family economics often determines many factors of that familys existence including the manner in which a husband
