a beginning point for describing nursing as a profession, but a dictionary definition alone does not suffice in declaring nursing to be a profession. Being an effective business person
requires specialized knowledge and may require long academic preparation as well, but it does not qualify as a "profession" in the manner that nursing does. Characteristics of a Profession
In establishing an appropriate definition of a profession in todays technical and economic climate, there needs to be several more qualifying criteria defining any
pursuit as a profession. Specialized knowledge certainly is one; another is the existence of organizations supporting, guiding and certifying individuals in the profession. A true profession also should
have a defined code of ethics, complete with civil and administrative accountability for adhering to that code of ethics. Nursing in todays health care environment meets all of these
qualifying criteria. Nursing has greatly evolved since the days of Florence Nightingale and the "Yes, Doctor" mentality in which it was forced to
exist for generations. Though Nightingale promoted a professional demeanor, nursing was not something that most well-bred women would even consider approaching in Nightingales day. It was a time
that legs were referred to as limbs because the word "leg" was simply too blatantly descriptive. Seeing the same was simply beyond the limits of propriety.
