native speakers. This study was based on the authors belief in the importance of identifying potential factors in the process of assessing what is to be said and producing
speech that could have implications of pedagogy. The researchers begin by identifying a number of studies that reflect an assessment of EFL production processes. Cohen and Olshtain
(1993) view a number of communication studies that reflect the correlation between speech act performance and the realization processes involved. These researchers looked at studies that identified specific speech
acts, including apologies, complaints, gratitude and compliments, and the situational elements that impact the thought processes of the English as a foreign language speaker. The existing research, the researchers
argue, lacked a comparative understanding of how EFL processes differed from those of native speakers and how this in turn influenced the specific choices of the speech acts utilized.
The researchers also recognized that existing studies have a high reliance on self-report measures and verbal techniques to address the assessment of what goes on or the thinking behind a
speech act. The researchers identified four primary research questions for the study: 1. To what extent do respondents assess and plan their utterances, and what is the nature
of this assessment and planning; 2. What is the language of thought used in assessing, planning and executing utterances? 3. What are the processes involved in the
search, retrieval and selection of language forms? 4. What is the extent of attention to grammar and pronunciation in the production of speech act utterances? (Cohen and Olshtain, 1993,
p. 36). These four research questions, then, are utilized in the development and application of the methodology and are the focus for the data collection process.
