fact that the region is predominately Islamic is a factor that is argued both for and against the establishment of more democratic governments. In addition to the factor of religion,
the economic, cultural and social environments of each nation play a role in democratization. It is argued that the society not the government is responsible for change. For democratization
to take place the individuals who comprise the separate nations will need to be proponents for change. MEANING OF DEMOCRACY If you reside
in the United States, you are probably proud of the fact that you live in a democracy. Citizens in many western nations identify with living in a democratic country where
they are assured certain rights and privileges. However, many individuals do not know the real definition of democracy. Democracy is the state of the country where the type of
governmental rule for the political policy of the country is decided on the basis of majority decisions (Democracy). The majority decisions that formulate the governmental rule are usually mandated
by elections or some type of voting mechanism. The definition of democracy previously was restrictive in its meaning. However, the definition has been broadened to incorporate the ideals of
society and culture (Democracy). The term democratic is now also used in reference to groups or organizations that use some type of voting in their decision making. Replacement
