sparked wars, and today, perhaps more than at any other time in history, there are tensions in the world that go to lifestyle and religion. Since September 11, 2001, conflicts
in the Middle East have heated up, and there is a sense that the battle lines are lines that go to civilization. Underneath the complaint by terrorists is a disdain
for the modern way of life, an inattention to religion and morality and a desire to change things. On the other hand are people who subscribe to popular culture and
cannot stomach the idea of war and killing for the sake of a higher power. And while these things loom large as the twenty-first century unfolds, there are a couple
of concepts that drive them. One is globalization and the other is cultural diversity. What is globalization? According to the globalization thesis, the rise of stateless transnational corporations has made
both the nation and nation state powerless and rendered it obsolete (Rude, 1997). Because these companies have made the state largely unimportant, multinationals have created a certain coherency to the
world economy (1997). Perhaps an example of a "stateless" corporation is one that merges and acquires subsidiaries in a variety of locales. One cannot, after awhile, tell which country a
business is really associated with. One gets a sense that globalization, while easy to define, is a relatively complex process. The concept of cultural diversity, on the other hand, is
a bit more difficult to define. Educators have realized that the importance of cultural diversity on teaching and learning ("Cultural," 2002) . They define the concept by first defining
