these children are at greater risk for many social problems, ranging from drugs, to crime, and even accidents and lower grades. Therefore, this is a problem that must be
taken seriously, and solutions must be considered with the health and future of children in mind. Failing to address this issue has both individual consequences for children as well
as larger societal consequences that range from problematic to severe. "With most children now living in families with a single parent
or both parents working outside the home, lack of supervision during the after-school hours is a serious and growing problem" (Unsupervised And Unsafe, 2004). According to a 1999 report,
there are over 3 million children between the ages of 6 and 12 that are routinely left alone either by themselves or in the care of a sibling (Crouse, 2003).
Clearly, the problem of children being alone is a real one. Many parents have to work and therefore have no care for their children before and/or after school
(Crouse, 2003). Furthermore, during breaks from school there may not be anywhere for the child to go that is supervised, so the kids end up staying home alone or
hanging out with friends (Crouse, 2003). "Unsupervised children with little to do after school have been a concern of educators and policy makers for decades" (Latch-Key Children, 2004).
The results are nearly always unfavorable (Crouse, 2003). Children under 13 who are left to their own devices tend to watch television and play video games, and in
