Modern society produces a tremendous amount of waste on a daily basis. In third world countries, not
only is waste production less, but items are reused and reused again. In addition, recycling is often much higher because people repurpose common items like containers and clothing for
other uses. The modern world, in contrast, seems focused only on producing more and more and throwing the produced goods away when we are finished with them. This lifestyle
is having severe impacts on the environment. Biological diversity is changing not just because more and more natural areas are being
used up by lands our consumer driven lifestyles are contributing so many pollutants to the environment that they are actually killing out species. Not surprisingly, over the last few
hundred years humans have managed to increase natural extinction rates by a factor of 1000 times (Cai, 2009). Plants and animals that could have proven invaluable not just from
an ecological perspective but from a humanistic perspective are forever gone. Gone too are the possibilities like new medicines and vaccines that could come from those organisms.
