essentially victimless crimes has sparked debate and prompted the creation of organizations, many of which possess easily accessible web sites. NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) is
perhaps the best known group that is against the war on drugs. Above all, it supports legalization of marijuana. Although pot is just one of many illicit drugs that many
feel need reform, the war on drugs continues. It begs for debate, but by and large, the political landscape is such that the laws will likely remain. Why? The liberals
are concerned with addiction and support addiction treatment and sympathy, but they do not want to see full legalization. The conservatives to some extent do not buy the addiction paradigm,
although that may change since Rush Limbaugh admitted to a serious drug problem. Still, they see drug abuse as something that goes to a weak will and contend that drugs
have ravaged the nation. To conservatives, the drug trade prompts crime and disarray. At the other extreme is the libertarian cause that does not see the government as having any
right in the business of the people other than to effect social control. Libertarians see drug use as personal choice and contend that the crime that goes with it is
only relevant because drugs are illegal. If drug use was decriminalized, then there would be no black market. A student writing on this subject may also argue that while
medical prescriptions are socially sanctioned, some are just as dangerous if not more, than many recreational drugs on the black market. Similarly, marijuana has been shown to be less harmful
than alcohol, which prompts many to suspect that the war on drugs is really a farce and that it is inextricable with the political and economic goals of politicians today.
