(Dowd, 1999). Dowd (1999) makes a good point, and uses examples like the Menendez brothers and Lorena Bobbitt. Clearly, the Menendez boys crying on the stand after bludgeoning their
parents to death seems to be the quintessential case in relation to this defense. The fact that there was a lot of money involved, and they freely spent it after
the tragic deaths of their parents, suddenly becomes unimportant. What seems to loom large is that a child was abused. Even if the abuse stories are completely true, it is
not an excuse for murder. There is similarly no excuse for cutting off anyones penis, no matter what they did. Dowd (1999) also points to other excuses like
PMS, and post-partum depression in addition to children killing due to violence on television. There has even been something known as the Twinkie defense, where people have claimed that junk
food caused them to snap (Wilson, 1998). Not too long ago, there was a case where Ozzy Osbourne was sued for one of his songs, suggesting that it prompted someone
to commit suicide. There is only so much the environment, or other people, can be blamed for a persons actions. If other influences are so important then no one would
be responsible for anything. After all, every like and dislike, and every activity, tied to an individual is related to some influence. Is the abuse excuse detrimental
to the justice system? Sometimes defendants do use sexual abuse as an excuse for why they committed crime. Admittedly, this is more than an excuse. It does appear that sexual
deviants have been molested as children. Still, there are many people who have been sexually abused who do not commit crimes. In some cases, killing and otherwise harming individuals is
