them and not the pollsters. This paper examines the polls that predicted George W. Bush would win the 2000 election, and why there was such a wide variance in their results. Discussion As it happens, George W. Bush did not win the 2008 election; at least not the popular vote. That went to Al Gore. But Bush carried the Electoral College and thus became the only the fourth president in history to lose the popular vote and still take office. In his article "The Weak-End of Polling," Larry Kudlow examines why there is such a variety of results in polls, even when they are polling the same thing, in this case, the point spread between Al Gore and Bush in the 2000 presidential race. (It should be noted that Kudlow is not unbiased; the article is posted on the National Review website, a conservative outlet; there is some crowing by the author who gleefully expects that he will keep receiving generous tax cuts.) He observes that the conventional wisdom has shown Bush to be leading the race by 8-10 points for months, with some surveys showing him up by 12 points. But Kudlow isnt sure that the polls are accurate and as it turns out, he has reason to wonder.
