Some of those actions involved killing unarmed and innocent people ("Testimony: Allegedly corrupt LAPD cops gave each other awards," 2000). The article is about the Rampart scandal that plagued Los
Angeles about a decade ago. It seems as if police officers are able to get away with a lot of things because they have authority. What happens is that
the officers cover up for one another. Rampart and other scandals that rocked police stations around America are indicative of this power and the fact that there is that blue
wall of silence. In other words, there is corruption in police departments but the problem is that the average citizen has to complain to the same department that wronged them
in the first place. Oversight is minimal and those who have been harmed have nowhere to turn. It seems as if in the Rampart case, the District Attorney had enough
evidence and was able to press charges against the corrupt police officers, but that is not common. Another issue pertinent to police corruption are strip searches. This is an uncomfortable
area. Sometimes, the police want to find out if a drug dealer is hiding drugs in a body orifice, or if a suspect is hiding something under his or her
clothing. On the other hand, there is room for abuse. It is possible that strip searches are another form of abuse, and it is a human rights issue. People should
have the right to keep their bodies covered and not to reveal themselves to officers. At the same time, the strip search is something that is done from time to
