vehicle is the mainstay of soccer moms and yuppies today. It is a status symbol and these SUVs become larger and larger every year. People practically live in them as
they are now often equipped with individual television systems and many conveniences of the modern home. And one issue that has loomed large and entered the political arena, is that
these monstrosities use a lot of gas. The increase in price in gas has only hurt the market a little bit. By and large, people do not care about the
environment. They want their big vehicles and large homes, even if it means hurting their surroundings with air pollution or clearing a forested area to make way for a new
development. Progress seems to be simultaneous with destruction, at least is it respects the environment. When it comes to ideas about development, they have been aligned with activities like paving,
logging, building and the draining of wetlands (Kline 125). National policies for example go to calculating the value of natural resources as it respects exploitation as well as discount to
their indirect value (Kline 125). It is generally assumed that development is something that entails increased standard, higher levels of production and energy usage and more extensive exploitation of natural
resources (Kline 125). It also includes significant rates of consumption and waste and such (Kline 125). And while government has paid some attention to the environment, many believe that it
has not been given enough emphasis. It should be said that these natural resources which seem to hurt the environment are not all that bad and they did come about
for good reason. During the industrial revolution there would be increased development of fossil fuels, first in the form of coal and then in oil and finally, gas (Lovejoy 266).
