such programs are by their nature unfair. Many opinions are compiled in a book called Affirmative Action : Social Justice or Reverse Discrimination? The point made is that affirmative action
is something that will not be settled just as the abortion dilemma will always have two sides. While the ideas behind affirmative action is perhaps exemplary, it has dangerous implications
that white males have experienced. Quite simply, although affirmative action tries to level the playing field, it is not fair. The 2000 Census was the first one to allow
the checking off of more than one box as it pertains to race (Arnold 4). This is important because it demonstrates that affirmative action does not include the ever-changing face
of the average American. No longer are people black or white. There is more and more intermarriage and hence, offspring surface who cannot describe themselves as aligned with one race
or another. Also, popular opinion does go against the concept. In general, Americans oppose racial preference in every form, and have suggested this strongly in many opinion polls, some of
these including a large number of African Americans also in opposition (Puddington 21). If the majority opposes a particular position, one would think that in a democracy, the popular vote
would rule. This is also consistent with the utilitarian point of view. Central to Utilitarianism is the premise that it is ideal to achieve the greatest happiness for the greatest
number (McLeish 768). Another point is that affirmative action, while once important, is an obsolete concept. Representative Watts, who supports affirmative action says it has no meaning
today (Pooley 12). Watts goes on to explain that one looks at the number of blacks in FORTUNE 500 management, and realizes that more work needs to be done (12).
