someone who had used others writing is caught. Not too long ago, a "brilliant" author came to the forefront, but it was soon discovered that she had plagiarized large portions
of her work. Although Kaavya Viswanathans denied the charges, her sudden notoriety quickly went away as did her book deals. In some respects, this anecdote sends shivers down the spines
of writers who fear that they have unwittingly plagiarized. Is it possible to remember several words which are the same as someone elses and transcribe it, thinking it is his
or her own? It appears that while true plagiarism is unethical, it is very difficult to determine its appearance. Sometimes, authors unintentionally plagiarize. Historically, there have been many cases of
plagiarism and in fact, a book was even written abut the topic and published recently called The Little Book of Plagiarism by Richard A. Posner. Posner (2007) actually has a
unique view on the subject, pointing out that plagiarism is something that has always been a problem. It is after all true that many ideas can be thought up by
more than one person. After all, many novels are formulaic. Characterization cannot be wholly original. Ideas are not necessarily original but they must be written in a particular way as
not to mimic the words precisely of another author. Some universities have adopted a five word rule for example, where more than five words in a row cannot be identical
to another authors. Posner (2007) does have a point in looking at the subject as something less than serious. The nuances of plagiarism are endless. What if someone writes: "The
cat sat on the" which is equivalent to five words. Someone might write "The cat sat on the bed" or "the cat sat on the chair" but no one would
