While it certainly wasnt the only reason, slavery was one
of the primary reasons that the American Civil War was fought. The southern states were committed to the idea that states should control their own affairs. In their
eyes, this right to control included the right to decide whether or not they would allow slavery within their borders. Various moves by the federal government, however, were perceived
as threatening those states rights. These moves set in motion the critical balance between free and slave states that would ultimately result in the Civil War.
There were many individuals in the years preceding the actual eruption of the war who resented the Union it for the control it tried to
place on issues which they considered to be issues of the state and not ones which should be controlled by the federal government. The young nation found itself
divided into two camps of people separated on the basis of a complex belief system and not simply by color. White citizens and free and enslaved blacks alike held
very strong opinions on the war and on the issues of expansionism, annexation and other political processes in which the nation found itself embroiled.
