There are for example some drug treatment programs within the prisons, and that is mostly tied to crimes where drug abuse is prominent. However, it is also the case that
while people are incarcerated for a variety of crimes, mental health should be a priority. Why? It seems that for people with criminal associations, there can be positive change and
this can only come about through counseling or psychotherapy. Many people would prefer that prisoners just be left to fester as they have wronged society in some way. People complain
that the prisoners even get to watch television or pump iron. Of course, it is rather cruel to let human beings sit in a cell for non-violent crimes. While heinous
murderers and pedophiles are not given much sympathy, many can find sympathy in their hearts for drug users who did nothing more than have an unfortunate genetic predisposition to addiction.
First, in embarking on this topic, it pays to define mental health. The DSM-IV "defines mental disorder as a clinically significant behavioral or psychological syndrome or pattern that occurs in
a person and that is associated with present distress (a painful symptom) or disability (impairment in one or more areas of functioning)" (Hermann, 1997, p.42). Mental health is not
only something that is peculiar to an individual, but it is something that affects the entire community. Certain mental health problems can prompt violent episodes and so, mental health is
a significant concern for all communities. Of course, to some extent, prisoners are helped. They do get general health care and sometimes mental health is a part of that. How
