This 11 page paper examines the problem of the increase in overweight and obese people in developing countries, which may also be linked to stunted growth and former malnutrition. overeating, bad diets and a sedentary lifestyle. However this perception is not accurate, whilst many developed countries do have issues with overweight and obesity they are not problems isolated to
these countries. In recent years research has indicated that problems of overweight and obesity are also present in many developing countries. Contrary
to the popularly held belief of malnutrition being the major problem, in many areas obesity has a greater occurrence than under-nutrition (Dobson, 2005). The problems are seen in many areas
especially countries such as Brazil and the rest of South America and the Caribbean. The only area this does not appear to be the case is India where malnourishment is
apparent without a corresponding problem with obesity (Dobson, 2005). Martorell, (2000) gathered data form a broad range of countries examining the prevalence of obesity with a sample size of nearly
150,000 women. In South Asia only 0.1% were obese, and in sub Saharan Africa this was only 2.5% (Martorell, 2000). In Latin America this increased to 9.6% and in the
Caribbean 15.4%, in North Africa and the Middle East this was 17.2% (Martorell, 2000). To place this into context the obesity levels in the US are 20.7% (Martorell, 2000). In
general terms the many developing counties appeared to have obesity consecrated in the more urban areas and in the populations that had gained a higher level of educated (Martorell, 2000).
The level of obesity also rose sharply until a country reached a development level of with e gross national products of US $ 1,500 per capita in 1992 levels (Martorell,
