longer talk. They text or write email. They are too busy to make friends, so isolation sometimes becomes a way of life. Yet, there are different types of isolation. Simply
enjoying alone time is not necessarily equated with a type of isolation that existentialists discuss. In examining the different types, there appear to be three. The type where people cut
themselves off from other individuals is referred to as intrapersonal isolation, and interpersonal isolation is equated with the fact that people are simply not in relationships that fulfill their needs
("Isolation v. Connectedness," 2008). In both types, there is a sense that either individuals ignore other people, or that their relationships are not meaningful. In both cases, there is a
sense that a deep relationship is not possible. The third type of isolation is existentialist isolation and is basically the following: "This refers to the reality that we are unable
to ever fully overcome our isolation. This is part of limitation of being human. An inability to accept this limitation can lead to neurotic, dependent, and symbiotic relational patterns. Through
acknowledging this limitation, a person is actually freed to an ability to relate on a deeper level" ("Isolation v. Connectedness," 2008). This idea is aligned with the fact that people
are alone all of the time because no one can experience what they are experiencing exactly. In discussing this further, it pays to first look at existentialism as a concept.
Existentialism is basically a loose term for the reaction against the abstract nature of Hegels philosophy (Honderich, 1995). Kierkegaard led the movement and claimed that there was a personal component
