storming and performing (Crowe & Hill, 2006). Crowe & Hill (2006) explains the last phase rather simply, as follows: " The last group phase, performing, occurs when the group works
past the conflict and the groups performance becomes much stronger as a result of overcoming their difficulties" (p.32). The last phase is desirable, but once the group is in this
stage, the members are vulnerable to groupthink. Groupthink is something that occurs when the team members decide that creating a consensus is the groups most important goal (Thompson, 2004). Obviously,
if everyone just agrees to agree, then opposing voices will not be heard. The opposing ideas can enrich teams as it allows various points of view to be discussed. When
teams end up in a groupthink mentality, its members hide their doubts and are over-confident (Thompson, 2004). The group always believes that it is doing the right thing so it
does not bother to explore other possibilities. It is difficult to diagnose a group that is succumbing to groupthink because it is largely something that goes to private feelings (Thompson,
2004). Yet, a couple of symptoms of this problem are close-mindedness and an overestimation of the groups potential (Thompson, 2004). Thompson (2004) elaborates on this and explains that overestimation of
the group occurs when the group sees itself as morally correct and invincible. What happens is that the group closes itself off to other judgments. Many people see this in
families. The family may support its other members, believing that someone on the outside is wrong, no matter what the situation. This type of camaraderie or loyalty is good to
