one of the most disturbing is the use of child soldiers. Many nations today have young children under arms. The violence and perversion to which these children are subjected is
shocking. This paper discusses the problem of child soldiers and what can be done about it. Discussion From a site called Global Issues1 comes a description of this ugly reality.
The author notes that the use of children as soldiers in the military is much more widespread than people believe, but countries dont like to talk about it (Shah). Small
arms, which children can handle easily, are readily available, which means that children can be trained to use them easily (Shah). In some places, "children as young as 10 have
been recruited into a conflict" (Shah). Sometimes, the children have known nothing but war all their lives, and the hatred their parents feel for their enemies is passed on to
the next generation (Shah). If a child attempts to return to society from his position as a soldier, he or she faces a grim period, since such children are
often "severely traumatized" by what they have seen and been forced to do (Shah). Reintegration into society is difficult, "especially when that society may be the very same one where
these young children may have been forced to fight and kill" (Shah). Shah notes that the United Nations has been encouraging the Security Council to "publicly condemn any military that
