sweatshop is "a factory, where people work for a very small wage, producing products such as clothes, toys, shoes, and other consumer goods" ("Sweatshop"). The concept usually references a factory
where workers have been kept in a detrimental environment and often where there is inadequate ventilation ("Sweatshop"). Workers in such environments are sometimes abused and often work in unsafe or
harsh conditions ("Sweatshop"). Again, this stereotype is a reality, but there are various degrees of Sweatshop life, which is why the topic is somewhat controversial. II. Background
Statement In the past, there have been situations even in the United States where sweatshops were commonplace. In fact, in the United States and Europe during the nineteenth and
early part of the 20th centuries, sweatshops offered workers with few skills, who were primarily new immigrants, an opportunity to make money ("Sweatshop"). This was seen as necessary for
these new entrants to survive. Some of these shops continue to exist in the west but are primarily found in the third world. Soon after the turn of the century,
and after the Triangle Factory fire, a lot has been done to assure that safe conditions for workers exist. This is around the same time that unions sprang up. Today,
they primarily fight for raises, but then, there were life and death concerns. Workers would be given rights as a result of union action. Of course, while there may not
be a lot of "sweatshops" in the United States today, there are many day laborers who are illegal aliens for the most part. They are also paid a much lower
