great deal of conformists, who do sway a bit to the right or left dependent on which way the wind is blowing, few would say that they are brainwashed or
lack individuality. Bill Gates in some way is a nonconformist. A Harvard dropout, he used his own initiative and his own mind to do something great that, by
the way, made him one of the richest men in the world. And by Ralph Waldo Emersons own admission, people do judge men by what they have, and not what
they are. Had Bill Gates simply put on a suit and became a lawyer, he would have also lived up to societys expectations, but by using his individuality he was
able to achieve a great deal more. In a society that suggests conformity stifles creativity, a lot of lip service is paid to dismantling institutions. Yet, these institutions made the
nation great. Bill Gates would never have achieved what he had, if he were not a part and parcel of the institutions that he had grown up with. He used
his own creative energy to produce a great career for himself, but he in many ways conformed. He conformed to the needs of society. In fact, he seemed to hone
in on exactly what it needed. With such an example, few could argue that the great institutions of America produce Stepford communities where people behave like robots. While it is
true that suburbia, for example, seems to display attributes that endorse conformity and sameness, few would say that all people are the same. On one block, there are different families.
