of themselves. Just as the adolescent feels all grown up and proud that they can get into a car, turn the key and drive, the elderly also feel a sense
of independence, and while they begin to lose their good judgment, and their reactions are slowed, they continue to get behind the wheel. This can end up in disaster if
in fact an elderly driver is really not a competent driver. Many widely reported incidents have come about to prompt a discussion on elderly driving. One incident that was
plastered all over news magazines, and news shows, was when a driver in Santa Monica, California plowed through a busy street or two, going two or three blocks before realizing
there was anything wrong. In that incident ten people died and forty were critically hurt ("Editorial"). What happened there? He hit the gas rather than the brake ("Editorial"). Of course,
this is something that few people would do. Most would notice that they are hitting and killing human beings, that they were not even on a road but riding through
a fair where the street had been blocked off and so forth. The fact that the driver was in his eighties likely did play a role in the demise of
the innocent bystanders who got in his way during that deadly summer day. Whether age is a factor is a fair question. During this day of political correctness, it
is not always discussed, but the issue is important. Statistics reveal that elderly drivers are in fact dangerous. It does seem that as people age, driving skills are diminished and
