often the case that new management would have to streamline in order to make the new company cost effective. Yet, today, downsizing is also equated with financial disaster. A slowing
economy and troubled sectors sometimes does force layoffs and this situation has developed long before September 11th. The Delaware Valley, a nice region with beautiful farms and country living,
has been hurting and is particularly troubled in weakened economies. Not too long ago, at the start of 2001, stores in the Delaware Valley such as Bradlees and Montgomery Ward-which
planned to go out of business anyway-announced layoffs (Thompson, 2001). J.C. Penney joined them and laid off employees (2001). While J.C. Penney had no plans to close shop, they were
downsizing (2001). In the Delaware Valley J.C. Penney laid off workers and that likely had a devastating effect on the families to which were attached to the company. Some people
were perhaps tied to the store for their livelihood. And while people were laid off from J.C. Penney, the company has also closed stores in some areas, something which was
deemed to be a part of the companys effort to consolidate holdings (Schenke, 2000). Downsizing is by no means something that has only happened in J.C. Penney or in
the Delaware Valley. It is a trend that seemingly began to peak in the 1990s, but today, many stores are laying off employees in order to increase profit or to
make ends meet. The effects of downsizing on middle-aged people can be devastating. For a man or woman who has had a career in retail for twenty years or
so, losing such employment can wreak financial havoc as well as being detrimental to self-esteem. It is particularly troublesome for uneducated individuals who live in areas like the Delaware Valley
