Descartes came up with, but while they are rather flimsy to some, they do provide substantial proof in the realm of philosophy. Still, Descartes work has been criticized. For example,
Massey (1997) notes: "One obvious problem with the "perspectival" interpretation of Descartes is that he formulates both his epistemological and ontological arguments by rejecting the idea that certainty can be
derived from sensual apprehension of the world" (p.1148). In other words, he has difficulty believing in an individuals perception, contending that they can be misled. That is an obvious point.
People can be wrong in terms of what they think they see or hear and so forth. Then, the critic asks, how can Descartes base his interpretation of who God
is by mans perception, at least in part? It is a difficult question to answer, but while Descartes work is problematic, in holistic terms it is sensible. At the same
time, the ontological argument is flawed, which is perhaps why it has been subject to much criticism. Still, the search for God is a rather immense task that philosophers have
been dealing with for quite some time. The fact that no one can know the answer for sure intrigues philosophers of this century as well as philosophers of the past.
