topics they are decidedly different but still bring up many moral implications. The stem cell dilemma is more significant and difficult to decide as people with killer diseases may be
helped, or even cured, through stem cell research. However, ethical dilemmas abound even when research can cure diabetics or people with MS. One problem is that human life is used
in the process of discerning the cure. Today, medical experimentation is thought to be cruel and much research comes in the form of animal studies. Only after an assurance
that a medication or procedure is relatively safe can research be done on human beings. However, with stem cell research, there is the fact that the cells used in the
research are human. Aside from religious debates there are true secular ethical concerns about growing a cluster of human cells for any purpose. What if the new creations are harmed
or experience pain? Can a monster be created much like what occurred in Dr. Frankensteins lab? Dr. Jean Wright, an anesthesiologist and pediatrician claims that even a fetus can
feel pain in as early as seven weeks of life (Strickler). At this stage, the pain may be quite severe and Wright puts it as three to five times more
significant than pain felt at a later stage of development (Strickler). From twenty weeks on, the babies certainly have nerve fibers and their synapses are all there (Strickler). Yet,
even prior to this point, pain may be experienced. Hence, therapeutic cloning, or cloning in order to harvest organs for example, is controversial too. Many questions loom. Is creating
human life from cells and then killing the brain but leaving an organ or more intact, something that is painful for the specimen? Do these clusters of cells have feelings?
