A society the promotes death is not a compassionate or great society. It is one that takes the easy route. If the prisons are overpopulated and the law does not work well, it is easier to just snuff out the murderers. That is what society does when it accepts the death penalty. Of course, just saying that the death penalty is barbaric does not negate the arguments for it and there are some good ones. In order to truly prove that the death penalty is not a positive approach to punishment, the reasons for its support must be addressed. The first reason usually given in support of the ultimate punishment is for the sake of retribution. That is, if someone commits a heinous crime, they deserve a similar fate. The death penalty is sometimes not nearly as harsh as the crimes they committed as the punishment is reserved for the worst offenders. One can imagine that putting someone to death by lethal injection is not as bad as the individuals actions if they involve pedophilia, rape and murder. The families of murder victims often wait for a verdict of death and believe that should be the case. This is because they want justice for their loved one. They do not want to see a murderer enjoy even another hour of life because of what they had done to the victim. In many ways, one can understand how the victims feel as well as how society views it.
