scientist alike. There is no proof of what these images represent or why they were recorded and in light of these facts the best we can do is imagine what
the purposes and meanings of these artistic relics present. Bearing that in mind we provide the following examination of what many scientists and professionals believe to be the probable meanings
and purposes of the art found from the Paleolithic period. Paleolithic Art "During the Paleolithic Period people are hunter/gatherers. This is at the end of the last Ice
Age and the climate in Europe is still quite cool" and it was during this particular time period that art likely "played an important role in the ceremonial life of
a clan or tribe" (Petersen, 2001; paleo.htm). One of the most popular and famous caves which depict some images that have intrigued people for years is that of the cave
paintings in Lascaux, France. "Paintings such as these at the cave of Lascaux are generally deep in the caves far from the inhabited areas near the mouth. This indicates that
the activities that took place there were not everyday activities - probably ritual activities" (Petersen, 2001; paleo.htm). Because the primary paintings are found deep within the caves it is
believed that the paintings were considered sacred and maintained a religious standing. "These, and other Paleolithic paintings are hidden deep within the caves - not in the areas used for
