Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 10 page research paper that discusses the importance of principals exhibiting transformational leadership. There are healthy school cultures, in which teachers and students feel valued and respected. However, there are also school cultures that are toxic, in which teachers feel unsupported, which seriously compromises the teachers' ability to create positive learning environments for their students. The difference between these two types of school environments can, in most cases, be traced to the leadership style of the principal. An examination of literature on this topic substantiates the position that principals who possess transformational leadership skills are the most likely to create healthy school environments in which all participants prosper and grow. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

poor leadership on the part of a principal and how this lack exacerbated the frequency of teacher burnout and turnover. In a school where Hornett was employed, two first-year teachers
left within the first two months of the school year, with one leaving the teaching profession entirely. Hornett (2001) relates that while this teacher began the year with enthusiasm and
dedication, she was belittled by the principal when she sought instructional help. The feeling of self-doubt and depersonalization that this engendered eventually overwhelmed this novice teacher who became convinced that
she lacked the skills necessary to be an effective teacher. No one else in this school community, no other teacher, offered any sort of support or friendship, which is
another factor that Hornett attributes to a lack of leadership. If the principal had "modeled and encouraged helping among staff, or had he initiated a teacher mentorship program, this situation
might have had a much different outcome" (Hornett, 2001, p. 13). In contrast to the toxic school environment, research shows that transformational leadership among principals has been positively associated with
predicting a health school culture (Hornett, 2001). Transformational leadership--how is it different? Considerable social research has focused on the topic of leadership and what factors or qualities contribute to
