Political leaders vied with each other to establish the finest libraries, to attract the most learned minds or the most accomplished artists." The idea of culture was a relatively "new kind of formal embellishment on political power" and as such "elations between princely patron and intellectual were not always easy. The artist, writer or philosopher had to prove their worth and highlight their individual contribution without being either a flatterer or an errant genius." With this understanding in hand we begin to understand the fine line that many philosophers and writers must maintain, especially those such as Thomas More and Machiavelli. While desiring to get their ideas across they understood that they must prove their authority without being too powerful a force. Unfortunately for Machiavelli his words were to incite anger in many and as such indicating that he had crossed that line. In the following paper we examine where More and Machiavelli were coming from in regards to offering an authority, and sense of humility as they offered their usefulness to the courts in their respective works. Machiavelli and "The Prince" Machiavelli has long worked for the nobles while also being a man who studied the conditions of power, political struggle, and warfare. As such, we note that this is where his authority stems from. And, through this we can note that his authority comes from experience, history, and erudition in many forms. He took this information that was part of his knowledge and attempted to offer advice to the rulers in a time when political and social struggle was incredibly intense.
