Castiglione’s work, on the other hand, is most often accepted without question as being one which is reflective of virtuosity and morality. This paper explores these varying viewpoints. A considerable volume of material was written in the Sixteenth Century regarding what was considered proper conduct. Two of the most important works were Machievellis "The Prince" and Castigliones "The Courtier". Despite common perception, each of these works was written with the intent of providing insight to virtuosity and morality. They differ considerably, however, as to the exact nature of this insight. Although Machievelli is often looked at as being a man for whom the end justified the means regardless of how immoral and condemnable those means may have been, he could also be contended to be a man of virtue and high morals. Castigliones work, on the other hand, is most often accepted without question as being one which is reflective of virtuosity and morality. Several facts must first be accepted when making a comparison of Machievelli and Castiglione. The first task at hand is an exploration of Machievelli himself. The name Machievelli has come to be associated with shrewdness, cunning and cynicism. The term machiavellian, in fact, has evolved as a synonym for those words. Machievellis name has also been associated with seriousness and intelligence, however, a man who realized that in order to accomplish a goal one had to proceed in a fashion that sometimes could be perceived as ruthless. It becomes instructive, therefore, to examine his work in the context of the time and also in the context of his other writings. Written in 1513, "The Prince" ("Il Principe") is only one of Machievellis works. "The Prince" was based on his observations of Cesare Borgia (Hutchinson Dictionary of World History, 1998).
