This requires the training offered to seminarians, which can be divided into four general categories, human formation; spiritual formation; intellectual formation and pastoral formation. The following examination of priestly formation will look specifically at pastoral formation and its implications for the priests ministry. The significance of the pastoral role was emphasized by St. John Chrysostom in his text De incomprehensibili (3, 6: pg. 48 725), when he said that you cannot pray at home as at church, where there is a great multitude, where exclamations are cried out to God as from one great heart, and where there is something more: the union of minds, the accord of souls, the bond of charity, the prayers of the priests. As this perceptive man of God points so eloquently points out, there is a special communion that exists when Christians worship together under the guidance of a priest. How does a man become this kind of spiritual leader? The four pillars of formation that constitute the Program for Priestly Formation are all interconnected and intertwined, separate threads, but collectively constituting the weave of the cloth that makes up the priesthood. From a certain perspective, therefore, the pastoral formation is the culmination this weaving process, that is, it provides the loom that brings all threads together in a coherent pattern (Program 2006). The priest is the "shepherd of souls" who stands with but also for Christ within the context of a church community (Program 2006).
