In the South for example, everything is fried. Of course, it seems as if the Northeast as opposed to the South contains more obese people despite this fact. In part, the discrepancy may be attributed to the fact that certain ethnic groups have a tendency toward overweight. Although such trends are changing as people become more Americanized, there are certain cultures that promote high fat foods, while other foods related to other cultures are actually more healthful. Exercise habits as well as genetics play a large part as well. It seems that more active cultures tend to see people who are thinner, even if they eat more of the wrong foods. It is not certain as to why Texas has a problem with obesity but it just might be that race and ethnicity play a role. The demographics of Dallas show that 36% are Hispanic, 26% are black and the rest of the populous contains between 1% and 6% of the following ethnic groups: German, English, Irish, Asian, Sub-Saharan African, French, Scotch-Irish, Italian, Scottish, African, Polish, Dutch, Swedish, Native American and Russian ("Dallas, Texas," 2005). What does this mean? It seems that the largest demographic is Hispanic and the second largest is black and these populations do tend toward obesity. It is precisely for this reason that the populous likely carries more weight than in populations where the majority are white. Yet, no matter what the actual reason for obesity in Dallas, Texas, the problem does exist and this is evidenced by information about obesity rates in the state as well as within Dallas specifically.
