The largest component of the San Franciscan tract of land known as "The Presidio" was transferred to the National Park Service in October 1994 (Tharp, 1995; Government
Accounting Office, 2001). It joined a smaller tract of land that had been transferred to the NPS in 1972 by the U.S. Army (Government Accounting Office, 2001). Both tracts
had previously belonged to the U.S. Army and were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962 (Government Accounting Office, 2001). The site had, in fact, been an active military
post for some 220 years (Government Accounting Office, 2001)! The 1,500 acres of pine woods abut Tomales Bay and San Francisco Bay (please refer to http://www.presidiotrust.gov/park/ggnramap.asp for a map
of this site). Now a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the tract is the home of over 770 historical structures (Tharp, 1995). The Presidio
is a tremendously valued habitat, the last remaining in the densely populated land that surrounds it (Government Accounting Office, 2001). The Presidio is interesting from another perspective as well,
however. That perspective is a cultural perspective. Of specific interest is the sites archaeological resources. Cultural resources are legally classified as
part of the California environment and consists of archaeological sites as well as the buildings and structures that are encompassed by the Presidio. Numerous reports have been prepared regarding
the cultural resources of the Presidio. These include a report prepared by the Northwest Information Center(NWIC) of the California Historical Resources Information System, Sonoma State University on May 22,
2003, and reports prepared by various other entities and titled: "California Inventory of Historic Resources", "Five Views: An Ethnic Historic Site Survey for California", "California Historical Landmarks", "California Points
