American history. This was a point where the outgoing administration was not popular and the people were eager for a change. It was also a time when several
key issues were on the front burner and the presidential election rode on those issues. Finally, it was a time when the presence of a third political party actually
complicated the vote and assured victory for one side and defeat for another. The Whig Party that was in existence in this time
period nominated General Zachary Taylor for their presidential contender. Interestingly, although Taylor was a heroic leader in the Mexican American War that had just unfolded, he had not only
never held a political office but had never even voted (Ellis and Walker, 2007)! The Whigs voted with a two third majority, however, to nominate him as their representative
(Ellis and Walker, 2007). The Whigs were desperate to win this election and their desperation only increased when they found out that President Polk was not going to run
again. They realized that they needed a charismatic individual if they were to win in the election of 1848. Taylor was what Tatalovich (2010) calls a "blank slate"
candidate, a candidate that could win the hearts of the electorate because he was personally appealing and a military hero. The Democrats too
were looking for a contender that they believed could pull the electoral votes that would be needed to win the election. They decided that Senator Lewis Cass was that
