involved in the Santiago Campaign who did receive Medals of Honor but Roosevelt did not (2001). Some wonder whether or not he deserved the award (2001). Some
query why he never received one. There is speculation that there was friction between the colonel and the War Department as he had criticized the department in a letter
(2001). In any event, Roosevelt did not let the lack of medal affect his career and he went on to become governor of New York, vice president of the
United States and then finally president (Techky, 2001). And while the medal controversy was buried as far as he was concerned, one hundred years after the Battle for San Juan
Heights, he was awarded the honor posthumously (2001). During a ceremony at the White House the award was presented in front of a painting of Roosevelt in battledress by President
Clinton (2001). Today, many presidents are not heroes. Some are of course, but the cries in politics is that one candidate or another somehow was able to get out
