popular vote before serving two terms as the 7th President of the United States from 1829-1837. Jackson quickly became a national hero because of his decisive defeat against the British
while serving the rank of Major General of U.S. Forces during the Battle of New Orleans from 1814-1815. An orphan at age 14 and an attorney by trade, he later
earned the nickname "Old Hickory" because of how tough he was on the battlefield and how strict his orders and commands were. And while many people consider Jackson a national
hero, not only during his time as a war general but also during his tenure as president, his controversial policies towards Native Americans devastated his reputation. This essay will address
